Hello there,

I think you might be interested to read about this, and if you support the cause that is moving the whole Spanish people to protest and demand a true democracy, you might want to publish it in your blog and spread the word.

Please have a look at this video to know what´s going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ55PC-ElSE

This is a post from an English blogger living in Spain: http://blogs.elpais.com/trans-iberian/2011/05/spain-get....html

And here is the manifesto that we are supporting, and also the date and time of the demonstration that we are planning in Dublin (there is another one in Cork as well) https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=202503726457580 (presently 493 attendees on the FB page)

Thank you in advance and I hope you can help us! May our example drives other countries to fight for what is ours, a true democracy, without having to pay for the crisis they have created. ... read full story / add a comment

Two recent articles make the strong case that IMF chief Strauss-Kahn has been caught up in a palace coup as it were from the extremist side of the IMF.

While it is easy to hate the IMF and row in with the corporate media and pronounce him guilty we have got to remember to step back from this story and examine the context. What is also interesting is the way that this is the same media that so eagerly brought us the Afghan War, Iraq war, bailout of the rich and austerity and impoverishment for the rest of us, here they are now attacking one of the key figures in this global institute. It is all rather strange ... read full story / add a comment

Some readers will be aware that for some time I have been advocating the construction of a cross-union grass roots network. A meeting has been convened tomorrow to discuss such a project. Unfortunately for me (and for any other with similar interests) a conference to discuss Republicanism & Socialism has been scheduled for some time now to take place on the same day. I publish these draft principles for discussion not to promote bureaucracy but with the intention that any such network formed remains a broad and militant organisation, the property of its members and not of one political party or another nor as a sectarian battleground. ... read full story / add a comment

Shell have restarted work in Mayo, starting construction on fencing around the compound, apparently a protest was violently broken up this morning. Maura Harrington is also in court today.

Shell choose their day to start construction carefully, when several campaigners were on their way to support Maura Harrington who has been summonsed for sentencing for charges that are now over a year old. This action is widely seen as blackmail by the State in an effort to end Mrs Harringtons resistance to the pipeline. The timing of Shell's action's today suggests they are being provided details of when court cases are happening, there have already been many arrests that have been timed to remove campaigners from the area at other key phases in the construction, most notably the 2008 and 2009 arrests of Pat O'Donnell while he worked at sea in order to allow the pipe lying ship the Solitaire to lie pipes across his fishing grounds.

(Guardian updates) 4.29pm: Ukuncut say that hundreds are now occupying their target, Fortnum and Masons, which they revealed half an hour ago on Twitter.

3.36pm: Here's a mid-afternoon round-up of the huge protest in London against the government's public sector spending cuts.

•Around 500,000 people have joined the TUC's rally against the government's public sector spending cuts in central London.

•The main group of the marchers demonstrated peacefully and walked along the pre-planned route from Embankment to Hyde Park.

•Anti cuts and tax avoidance protesters closed down more than 13 shops on Oxford Street whilst many more shut their doors

•The protest has been largely without violent incident but a breakaway group of protesters attacked shops and banks in the Oxford Street area. A scuffle broke out between a handful of activists and police in New Bond Street.

How can we think beyond the immediate pressures of responding to the recession, the IMF/EU bailout, the elections and so on? How has the ground shifted under the feet of social movements in the last few years? Where do struggles for equality and global justice stand now? This event brings together activists and researchers from Mexico, Scotland, the US and Ireland in an open event aimed at thinking strategically and understanding both what is now becoming harder to imagine and what is now becoming possible. ... read full story / add a comment

The UNITE trade union has called on Labour to resist the lure of coalition with Fine Gael and opt instead to lead a ‘game changing’ opposition coalition of the left.

“This election was about change,” said UNITE Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly. “Part of the change was unequivocal; the removal of Fianna Fáil from power, but the rest is now in the hands of the Labour Party leadership.”

“The people did not vote for a Fine Gael overall majority. Their policies on privatisation, austerity and income cuts did not attract eno
ugh support and should not now be facilitated by the tired old fallback of coalition with Labour.” ... read full story / add a comment

The latest IMF report, published last Friday, two days after the gombeens in Leinster House voted to accept the deal, reveals plans to reintroduce third level fees, abolish the current grant scheme for low income students and replace it with a loan scheme to pay for fees and confirms that child benefit will be means tested. None of these specific proposals were contained within the so called Memorandum of Understanding between the IMF and the Dublin government. éirígí has issued a press release copied below - here is a link to the IMF report - details of these latest measures are on page 24 of the report. http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2010/cr10366.pdf ... read full story / add a comment

Capitalism is in never ending conflict with the working class and with its capitalist rivals. This is the objective reality and why it has to have secret diplomacy. It cannot be honest or its system would spin out of control. The wikileaks have dealt an important blow to capitalism's needs in this area. As a result capitalism is going after wikileaks in a very serious way. This assault has to be opposed. Let us build a Hands Off Wikileaks campaign. See more proposals below. ... read full story / add a comment
