A large number of Palestine solidarity activists gathered in Cork city centre today to stage pickets outside stores that sell Israeli produce. This was part of the national boycott Day of Action, with similiar protests held across the country. read full story / add a comment

A vigil was held on Patrick's Bridge in Cork city this afternoon to mark the beginning of the Gaza massacre last year. More than 1,400 people - including over 300 children - were killed by Israeli forces during the onslaught.

Today's vigil was intended as a mark of respect for the dead but also as an act of solidarity with the living. read full story / add a comment

A protest vigil will be held on Patrick's Bridge in Cork at 2pm on Sunday, 27 December, to mark the beginning of last year's Gaza massacre and in solidarity with the 'Viva Palestina' aid convoy which is currently stranded on the Jordan/Egyptian border.

While we all reel in horror at what has happened to the inhabitants in Cork City because of flooding' why on earth has it taken 8 years and hundreds of thousands of euros for the inhabitants of the harbour of Cork to get someone in planning to recognise that building a toxic or municipal plant on a flooding site on a crumbling coastline at a time of climate change is lunacy.

Yesterday evening the Cork branch of the Worker’s Solidarity Movement hosted a talk by South African anarchist and ZABALAZA Anarchist Communist Front (ZACF) member, Jonathan. The ZACF is an organisation of anarchist individuals from South Africa who identify with the communist tradition within Anarchism. The front is organised around the principles of theoretical and tactical unity, collective responsibility and federalism. Tribute to Paddy Mulcahy.

Paddy Mulcahy died on Sunday last the 13th. September. Since then thousands have mourned his passing and demonstrated their great respect for him with the massive turn out at his waking and funeral. Many were the fitting and well deserved tributes paid to him over the immediate days of mourning and burial.

To us Paddy Mul deserved all of that.

Sixteen workers at a Co-op Superstore in New Square, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork are holding a sit-in protest as a result of the company announcing redundancies without discussions with their union. The company, which is partly owned by Dairygold and their shareholders, have also announced the closure of their Patrick Street store in Fermoy, Co. Despite being hugely in debt, removing murals commemorating Cork’s history seems high on the agenda of those in City Hall.

That was the message clearly shown when Cork City Council recently removed tributes painted by Ógra Shinn Féin to the former TD and Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, and the Roll of Honour of Fianna Éireann, Chorcai.

The death occurred on Friday night at his home in Youghal, Co. Cork of veteran peace campaigner and socialist activist Bob Bickerdike at the age of 89 years.

Regular Indymedia readers will recall that Bob featured here after receiving the "Working Class Hero 2009" award from the Cork May Day committee last month in recognition of his many decades of struggle on behalf of and with working people and his lifetime involvement in the peace movement. read full story / add a comment
