On April 27th, 2010, a comment appeared on the Indymedia UK newswire entitled Don't use SPEAK as a model. The comment, on an article entitled New animal lab at Leicester; New nationwide campaign to start urged readers to respond to the campaign by "Model{ling} the campaign on a successful AR campaign such as Hillgrove cats or Darnley(sic) Oaks etc". Readers familiar with those campaigns will be aware that the campaigns are alleged to have included violent actions against individuals, including a letter bomb in the Hillgrove Cats campaign, and the removal of Gladys Hammond from her grave. read full story / add a comment

In a series of rolling protests organised by the Union of Student in Ireland, over 2,000 students demonstrated in Cork City on 1-12-2010 against proposed hikes to the student registration fee. In a strong address to the protesters in Grand Parade , University College Cork students union president, Keith O'Brien said it was monstrous that education funds were being cut and students were being forced to pay increased registration fee hikes by a government guilty of gross mismanagement. read full story / add a comment

"The allegation was key for the US, however, as it would, if true, be an excuse for the major missile defense deployments in Europe, nominally aimed at Iran but far outside their known missile range. This would have ideally placated Russia and given the US another excuse to rail against Iran. Or it would, if it was actually true." read full story / add a comment

There are currently around 100 student activists occupying the grounds of the Department of Education, on Marlborough St., Dublin.

At the time of writing there is an open space discussion happening on the subject of "alternative education".

Gardai have locked the gate and are not allowing additional participants to enter. However the atmosphere inside is peaceful and constructive.

Come down to Marlborough St. (off Talbot St.) to show your solidarity with the activists inside!

The Surprise Conference 2010, is an event organized by a group of autonomous individuals with the view to starting a more open minded conversation about the future of Irish education that the one that is currently taking place. We feel that the current education system is expensive and inefficient and rather than simply making financial cuts we should make long term structural changes.

Reclaim our natural Resources
Time for a new Land League?

This is a short briefing regarding the ongoing privatisation of Coillte. It needs to be considered in conjunction with the theft of our other resources, including but not limited to oil and gas, water, minerals, fish, seeds and various utilities. I have done as much research into it as I am able for the time being. I hope others will be able to take up the baton and go deeper with a view to developing strategies to counter this. Please pass it this info on to relevant people.

Today in Dublin, in a massive demonstration not witnessed in Ireland since 2003 when over 100,000 marched in protest against the then impending criminal attack on Iraq by the US, a similar number marched in protest against their ongoing immiseration by a criminal Irish government, hell bent on forcing on them and the most vulnerable in Irish society the gambling debts of their cronies in the financial and property developer sector of the Irish economy. read full story / add a comment

There was a huge turnout on the march today to protest against the IMF/EU Cuts FF Government despite the freezing weather.

A huge mass of people had assembled at Wood Quay for 12 noon and it was a sea of flags, banner and placards and it took at least half an hour possibly more for the full procession of people to pass. Many were blowing whistles and a few banging pots and pans in recognition of the IMF Argentina crisis back in 2001. The march stretched all the way back along the North side of the quays to O'Donovan Rossa bridge connecting Winetavern St beside Wood Quay to Ormonde Quay. read full story / add a comment

Last night at a Special General Meeting, members of the Dublin Food Co-Op voted overwhelmingly to boycott Israeli goods. This was the third attempt over the last 2 years to bring in a boycott of Israeli goods. Previous attempts failed to reach consensus or when put to a vote failed to reach the required 75%. Last night the mood was clearly in favour with a final tally of 50 for to about 6 against. read full story / add a comment

A vigil was organised to meet next to our national monument on Grand Parade, with a few hours notice, in honour of the loss of Irish sovereignty. As numbers grew, so did the need to march on the streets, the anger was palpable at yesterdays announcement that the IMF would now be loaning Ireland, under Brian Cowen's leadership, up to €90bn. read full story / add a comment
