In June of this year Art Ability – a community organisation assisting children and adults with disabilities - based in Agnes Street, Belfast, was given just one week’s notice that it’s funding was to be removed. A SIPTU organised campaign has been running since then to secure funding to protect this vital cross community organisation from closure, and to ensure its client’s needs were addressed. This campaign resulted in the initial securing of limited funding which did not fully protect the organisations future. However, as a direct result of the SIPTU campaign we are delighted to be in a position to report that interim funding has been secured to enable the organisation to continue to operate. Art Ability will now be in a position to apply for further funding for the autumn quarter, and their doors remain open. read full story / add a comment

The AFAR group has been contacted by various people expressing their disgust at the prospect of an animal abusing event in Galway. Are Donkey derbys not a relic of bygone days? This is the front page of the CURRENT Galway Independent. As part of a forthcoming "comedy" festival, radio presenter (Hector OhEochagáin) is publicising a Donkey Derby. AFAR is totally opposed to cruel spectacles especially in light of the increasing number of horse and equine cases that have come to light.animal violations are increasing at an alarming rate as any one will confirm who is involved in animal protection. Following his death in New York in march 2011, Sean Cronin's ashes are to be scattered in his native BALLINSKELLIGS on Saturday 17th September - following Mass at 11am in local DUNGEAGAN church. This afternoon, RNU held a march from the New Lodge/Antrim Road Junction to Clifton Street Cemetary in North Belfast. Where a commmemoration was held for United Irishmen; Henry-Joy McCracken & William Drennan both of who are interred in the Graveyard. A couple of hundred participants attended and listened to local Historian and Author; Joe Graham and RNU Chairperson; Carl Reilly. A number of wreaths were also laid from Political Prisoners in Maghaberry & Portlaoise and from RNU. read full story / add a comment

On Friday 26th and Saturday 27th of August, Seomra Spraoi will be host to the first gathering of the No Borders network to take place in Ireland. No Borders campaigns struggle alongside those effected for freedom of movement, for the freedom for all to stay in the place which they have chosen, against repression and the many controls which multiply the borders everywhere in all countries. This gathering is working towards establishing a network of individuals and grassroots organisations within Ireland and abroad who are working on the questions of migrants and asylum seekers. read full story / add a comment

AFAR would like to strongly condemn the killing of four horses at Tramore Racetrack on Sunday . APPARENTLY …a combination of fast ground and tight bends contributed to an incident-filled four-day festival at Tramore last week but there was an unfortunate heavy toll on Sunday. AFAR does not accept the weak excuses for these animals losing their lives and suffering needlessy in the name of profit and gambling. read full story / add a comment
