The false sense of security of the internet has been completely overturned by the latest security bug to be discovered. A bug in the popular OpenSSL library used by many of the most important and frequently used server sites on the net allows arbitrary chunks of memory to be read remotely from user machines and servers, possibly containing very sensitive data, user tokens, bank details, emails and passwords. What does all this mean and how did it happen and what can we do to protect ourselves? read full story / add a comment ![]()

We are entering an era of technological change which has the potential to create havoc in an already seriously undermined world of employment. It has become a well-worn cliché to declare that the robots are coming but it is necessary to consider seriously how the creeping technologisation of production and services is going to affect many areas of employment considered today to be relatively safe from the machines. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last night and this morning, Shell were blocked from accessing their newly created compound in Aughoose for 16 hours after a protester locked on underneath an IRMS security van that was blocking the entrance. Members of the local community and Rossport Solidarity Camp kept vigil throughout the night, worried that IRMS might try to use similar violence to the night that Willie Corduff was beaten up while under a lorry at the Glengad compound in 2009. read full story / add a comment

The much trumpeted discovery of RNA and DNA copperfastened in the public mind the discrete, "quantum" characteristics; in a sort of "digital" understanding of human genetics. It may have blinded us to qualitative effects and the incalculable genetic fallout from widespread prescription of neuroleptics and other pharmaceuticals. One of the tragically serious ironies of this is that people of otherwise very high genetic perfection are often the most prone to "mental illness." read full story / add a comment

Such a system will be ineffective in its goals, produce perverse effects, impose substantial costs, and reduce freedom of speech. read full story / add a comment |
