Neither public nor private debt is the problem. Instead public/private debt is a product of the problem of profitability. Because of the lack of profitability debt has ballooned thereby reinforcing the problem.

For capitalism to economically recover a very deep depression involving massive reductions in the value of labour power and social welfare spending is a necessity. The only other (authentic) option is global communist revolution.

Recent hysteria in the corporate media has exposed a growing fear in the capitalist establishment at the rise of socialist republicanism in Ireland,

The latest example follows a protest outside Leinster House in Dublin, called to demand the Jailing of Ireland's Bankers when a group of anti- austerity protestors confronted Labour minister for communications, Pat Rabbitte.

Two co-ordinated gun attacks on 4 January 1976 in British Occupied Ireland, shot dead two unarmed members of the Reavey family and three members of the O'Dowd family, with another two wounded, one of them died a month later. These murders were part of a string of sectarian attacks on Catholics and Irish nationalists by an alliance of British soldiers and British police officers. Billy McCaughey from the police Special Patrol Group, admitted taking part and accused another British police officer, of being involved. His colleague, John Weir, said two British police officers and a British soldier were involved The O'Dowd and Reavey murders, in what became known as the murder triangle, were a major factor, in young men and women like 19 year old Martin Corey from nearby Lurgan, joining the IRA, to defend their communities from British State terrorism. read full story / add a comment

The question on the lips of many people who have attended the recent anti- austerity protests in Ireland is ‘where are the masses?’ Some who have taken to the streets have been disappointed by the numbers turning out, comparing Irish protests to those in Greece or Turkey and have begun to ask ‘why aren’t the Irish people fighting back?’ read full story / add a comment

A brief history of the deforestation of Ireland and why it happened.....

It is well known that Ireland has a very low level of tree cover, among the lowest of any European country – in 2012 it had risen to almost 11% although it is still way below the European average of 30%. Of course about half of this 11% is Sitkha Spruce, which is non-native and causes acidification of the soil.

A lot has been written about the Michael McKevitt case over the years since his incarceration in 2001. Whether his reputation as an unrepentant republican is palatable to many people or not, he has endured the wrath of a very vicious print media campaign throughout that time and even before. We overlook the fact that the media onslaught was also waged against his entire family without any justification whatsoever and the standards used against them fell well below anything that we could even attempt to describe as 'normal practice'. read full story / add a comment

David Norris has recently been diagnosed with cancer which he speculated appears to be related to the initial incidence of viral hepatitis which he contracted from tainted drinking water while he was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994. There is much discussion about this online, but this personal situation may have added fire and urgency to his impassioned breathless speech in defence of the Seanad. Here it is. "I have been in prison for over 3 years and I still haven’t been given a reason. They have put forward a number of allegations against me, and I’m not able to defend myself against any of them. They say I have been seen speaking to known republicans, and that I visited a number of houses. What does that matter? It doesn’t mean I’ve done anything wrong. They have absolutely nothing on me, and that’s why they haven’t charged me." Martin Corey read full story / add a comment
