Far from being a new broom or ‘reformer’, writes Eddie Ford, the new pope is a reactionary to his marrow

Unless you possess a very strong stomach, mainstream media coverage of the new pope (aka Jorge Mario Bergoglio) has been truly revolting. A tidal wave of idiotic, euphoric banality. Then again, what else do you expect from the likes of the BBC, which always genuflects before anything that appears strong, powerful and ancient?

The government is planning to sell off our national forests which are currently owned by Coillte. The plan would be to sell harvesting rights on 500,000 acres out of 1.2 million that they manage. They claim it is worth €700 million although in the Peter Bacon report on Forestry, he puts the true value at €360 million or the equivalent of 3 days of government expenditure. Bacon said: "economic rationale for the proposed sale of harvesting rights no longer stands up and cannot be justified." and that he further concluded it would actually cost the state €1,300 million to sell the harvesting rights of Coillte due to various liabilities. The report says that the forests should be developed further as a public resource. read full story / add a comment

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq. Ten years ago, the world watched the “shock and awe” bombing campaign light up the nighttime sky of Baghdad with billowing clouds of flame and smoke.

This campaign and the bloody ten years of occupation that followed had a devastating impact on what was once among the most advanced societies in the Middle East. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed and millions were made homeless.

The American military’s conduct of the war produced crimes of staggering dimensions. This included the turning of Fallujah, a city of 350,000 people, into a free-fire zone, the bombarding of its occupants with white phosphorus shells, banned by international law, and the summary execution of wounded prisoners. Ten years later, the rates of child cancer and birth defects in Fallujah are similar to those in Hiroshima following the US atomic bombing. read full story / add a comment

BEN MURRAY MEMORIAL

On Saturday, March 9th, at Moy Bridge, Aughnacloy, a memorial was unveiled to Ben Murray, who resided close by. The construction of the monument was organised by a group from North Monaghan and South Tyrone, supported by the Friends of Charlie Donnelly and a broad group of Left and Republican organisations.

Ben Murray was a trade unionist and left-wing activist, who was killed fighting fascism in Aragon, Spain, in March, 1938. The unveiling took place on a cold, wet and windy Saturday afternoon, following the wreath-laying ceremony at Edendork, Dungannon, at the Charlie Donnelly monument. read full story / add a comment

As a dozen car bombs exploded in Shia districts around Baghdad today, another 50 people are dead and many more injured, on the tenth anniversary of the US-UK invasion of Iraq. Britain's international legacy of hate continues, as yet another result of its poisonous, divide and conquer policies around the world it invaded, with the exception of just 10 countries. Sunni factions linked to al-Qaeda, continue attacks on Shias. A wing of al-Qaeda, has vowed to regain ground lost to the invading US/UK armies.A decade after US and British invaded, Iraq still struggles with fostered sectarian feuding among Shia, Sunni and Kurdish tribes..The cabinet has postponed elections in two provinces, Anbar and Nineve for six months because of violence there, further proof of absurdity of the invasion. read full story / add a comment

President Hugo Chavez was unique in multiple areas of political, social and economic life. He made significant contributions to the advancement of humanity. The depth, scope and popularity of his accomplishments mark President Chavez as the ‘Renaissance President of the 21st Century’.

Many writers have noted one or another of his historic contributions highlighting his anti-poverty legislation, his success in winning popular elections with resounding majorities and his promotion of universal free public education and health coverage for all Venezuelans.

In this essay we will highlight the unique world-historic contributions that President Chavez made in the spheres of political economy, ethics and international law and in redefining relations between political leaders and citizens. We shall start with his enduring contribution to the development of civic culture in Venezuela and beyond.

We are living in a society where the combination of fractional-reserve banking (lending out multiples of deposits) helped along by quantitative easing (printing almost unlimited quantities of money) based on fiat currencies (money without intrinsic value) has created exponential growth for the world’s financial elites. This led to unprecedented bubbles in the property market as banks made it easy for people to borrow more money than they would have been allowed in the past when a conservative banker guideline for a home buyer was to have a two to two and a half times mortgage-to-salary ratio.

Last year the Tory Mayor of London attacked the Irish community and Saint Patrick's Day celebrations there, describing them as left wing crap. This year a whistleblower inside MI5's multi-million pound palace in Hollywood, has revealed that Martin Corey, who has been locked up for almost three years without trial, charge or explanation of length of sentence, has in fact been indefinitely interned, for wearing a green tie at an Irish parade in Bodenstown.
