International Womens Day - Arise Arise Arise

category dublin | gender and sexuality | event notice author Monday March 04, 2013 17:24author by Rita Fagan - Family Resource Centre St. Michaels Estate Report this post to the editors

Dear Sisters,

It has been an incredible hard time for women in our society. A shocking attack of austerity is impeding women’s lives from every angle; from Lone Parents, Children’s Allowance, Maternity Leave, Household Groceries, Household Utility bills, Property Tax and so on. With the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar, the unfolding of the Magdalene Laundries, with the attack on low paid civil servants, the women who feed the sick and those who keep our hospitals clean. The severe and systematic attack on Community Projects the places where many women invest their spirits and lives for the betterment of their communities.

2012 was an awful year in which we lost some great women….here are just a few:
Mary Rafferty – Journalist
Maeve Binchy – Writer
Marian Jameson – Community Activist
Jacinta Donnelly - Community Activist
Inez McCormack - Trade Unionist

And many more unfortunately. These women made significant contributions to our society. All of the above is the battlefront, the frontline, the Grassroots!

We it is that time of year again for Bread & Roses. We are inviting you to come and celebrate, the 1913 Lockout is the theme you can come as you are or dress up. We will all have a great night – we could very much do with it! So it is back in Wynns Hotel on the 07th of March 2013.

No mention of Marian Price........maybe your hoping this will pass for feminism, but without even a mentioning of Marian price i'm not sure how you expect to be taken serious beyond your own comfort zone.

Marian Price actually challenged the system in place in this country.

there was no offence meant with this list of names, i did write down that there were many others such as Ellen Pence who was a fantastic activist against violence against women as well as the huge committment of Marian Price in terms of Ireland, women and fighting the system.

The names i put there some where very close to me...two were colleagues one of whom died very suddenly through cancer.

So i am sorry if i offended you and i dont fit into your criteria of feminism...but i can assure you one thing the battle ground where i fight the struggle is certainly not a cosy place,

Have a good International Womens Day whatever you are doing for it,
