Climate Change Action Now: Demonstration This Friday 13th ,Dublin City

category international | environment | press release author Tuesday April 10, 2007 14:30author by Students Against Climate Changeauthor email UCDStudentsUnion at gmail dot comauthor phone 0868122700 Report this post to the editors

Students Against Climate Change, a group started by UCD Students Union and involving students and people of all ages and abckgrounds, are kicking off their campaign this Friday at 1pm, Dublin City.

Climate Change Action Now - Demonstration, Friday 13th, Dublin City.

Climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet. Experts believe that if we do not start substantially reducing our greenhouse gas emission soon, the Earth could even become unable to support human life.

.

We need to act now to prevent this crisis, but so far the world's governments –especially ours- have been slow to act. We have an opportunity now, with the upcoming General Election to put the Irish Government under pressure to take real steps toward tackling climate change.

Students Against Climate Change is new group who aim to campaign for real action from the Irish Government on this issue. We are calling for all people –students or otherwise- who care about the future of our planet to come to the demonstration in Dublin City Centre on Friday, the 13th of April at 1pm. Meet outside the Dáil and from there we will march on the Department of the Environment. The event will be lively, peaceful and entertaining with various activities including music, food and also speeches from some of Ireland's most well-known proponents of this issue.

Just like people power stopped the Ozone Layer crisis by bringing about a global ban on CFCs, we can force keep forcing this issue into the centre of the political agenda until Ireland starts cutting its greenhouse gas emissions, thus sending a message throughout the world that every country must do its part.

We are demanding:

1. A Climate Bill to be put to the Dáil committing Ireland to a 3% annual reduction in national Greenhouse gas emissions.

2. An end to the reliance on carbon trading (buying carbon emission "credits" from other countries instead of cutting our emissions) as Ireland's primary way of meeting emissions reduction targets.

3. More ambitious and binding targets for investment and promotion of renewable energy in all sectors, including heating and electricity, and more focus on public transport.

(Visit http://ClimateChangeAction.bebo.com for full details on these demands).

All of our future depends on students, workers, and people of all ages, backgrounds, races and views taking a stand now and demanding action on climate change. You can play your part by coming to the demonstration on Friday the 13th at 1pm. Bring your friends, family members and whoever you can, for a lively, peaceful and fun event. Together we can build a vibrant, creative and positive movement –a network of people of all ages who care about saving our planet for ours and for future generations, and who are willing to make their voices heard.

Definitely, I agree. But as a worker, how do you expect me to be able to make it to the demo? I'm at work at 1pm on a Friday!

Well done, I'll definitely be there. A few of us here in Trinity are heading along too.
