news report
Monday September 28, 2009 19:49 by Red & Black
Last night a man wearing dark clothes threw a petrol bomb through the window of the Dept. of Finance on Merrion Street in Dublin. There was little damage done to the building itself, although the window was smashed and the window-frame was seriously damaged.

It would appear to me that this story was silenced. Though RTE will talk about 'packages' and 'suspect devices' and even 'viable explosives' every day...but one hits the real target and silence.....
.....very telling....
who ever the dark knight is he has balls early in the nite to do that no one in the building probaly a hundred security cameras around who ever did this is well pissed but unlike the rest of us he got up of his ass and made a decesion which if caught you can gaurantee would be all over rte, the less media attention the better you can be sure behind closed doors they be shitting them selves
How much did it cost?
bottle was from recyle bin petrol was sponsored by topaz the rag was his olde boxers
we wouldn't want the serfs to get any notions. Like, when it comes down to it, how easy it actually is for a bunch of poor people to get together to destroy the expensive properties and multi million dollar equipment of all our lords and masters. And property / money is all they care about, not people. Imagine if the serfs figured out that the system and the courts are all stacked against them and walking around with signs or holding tribunals really doesn't get you anywhere. Imagine if they decided to burn down anglo Irish bank. Or set fire to shell equipment in erris.
Better keep a lid on that kind of behaviour. Feed them some more jobs eurofear. Then some mindless soaps. And reduce the price of beer, quick! Meanwhile up the ante on the surveillance society and strengthen police powers. You can clearly see the pattern in lisbon. You can also see it in the exaggerated sentences of animal welfare activists and eco-warriors in the US who have given up normal channels in exasperation and now choose to destroy property out of desperation. Axe murderers sometimes get treated better. Less of a threat to what's really important you see
People think social welfare will be cut badly in the budget but remember, the only thing REALLY stopping the serfs from rising up and kicking some ass is the dole. If you aren't hungry and can go get pissed once a week, it really takes the wind out of your revolutionary sails!!
You see on one level it's all very simple isn't it?.
Very Rich powerful folks steal everything and enslave us and our children to make money for them and they pay us a pittance for stealing away our potential and our time. Then they devise all sorts of structures to take back the money they gave us and to keep us in check.
But what do they do with all that money? They buy stuff. And stuff burns. And when it does, rich people become poor people again.
Not the sort of cocktails these fatcats usually get thrown at them late at night for free!. A few more of those and those assholes that are destroying the future for our children might be under the table, feeling a little vulnerability and humility for the first time in a very long time.
An interesting ingredient has been thrown into the mix by this anonymous black avenger.
I see where you're coming from V, certainly marching up or down O'Connell St seems like a frustrating waste of energy, and probably just makes those in power smile.
ON the other hand there is a whole security apparatus in this state that's part of capitalism but evolved even more so in Ireland to fight republicanism, it is in the police, media, government and in most people's heads and it is just thirsting for new "terrorists" to fight. It has done its best to create them out of the Rossport struggle, to no avail to date. Do you not think we would be just playing into its hands if we start burning stuff?
To defeat capitalism I think we need to paralyse the state and the only way I can see to do that is mass civil disobedience. I think violence will play its part but only after non cooperation has weakened the State. A struggle with "terrorists" would probably only strengthen the State at this stage. What do you think?
Mind you I don't see the mass civil disobedience breaking out today or tomorrow so I am cheering on our dark knight too even if his/her action was just symbolic!
Not too sure about the media silence, it was in the Irish Times all day. Are we getting too excited about this?! :-)
and Ideally a Ghandi approach would be my preferred option too. But also I think we have gone soft and scared as a nation. Too many skinny lates and soaps and Ikea boy furniture. Perhaps it's time to start a "fight club"!. Maybe we are so far gone that we really need some kind of inspiration to start the engine up again. a few isolated incidents like our dark avenger friend instigated might be a catalyst to mass action of some description. Ideally of the mass co-ordinated civil disobedience variety you described. After all, often what gives people the strength to fight on against oppression are the stories of the lone heroes that went before and demonstrated bravery in the face of huge odds. Many of our previous heroes have been tarnished by incessant and systematic erosion in the media. Perhaps we need a few new ones.Look at things like the water privatisation in Bolivia. Like it or not, large scale successful revolutionary change does not come without breaking some eggs. Personally I'd prefer if those eggs were the expensive material investments of the traitorous bad eggs that are leading our country astray and those of their assorted wealthy cronies. Not our children's fragile hopes and futures.
More than likely this was the act of a desperate or disturbed individual. It didn't get much coverage in the media because it isn't important. This was not a blow against capitalism or the state it is a very minor distraction. What we need is a general strike not a broken window and a few scorch marks!
Hmmm, general strike?
So we all take our 5% pay cut, including the clowns at the top of the union (which they make up by taking more expenses) and whay happens?
Anyway, their wont be a general strike because there are not enough people active (I mean really active) in the union and the leadership is dandy. (remember the last general strike)
As a Socialist you should know better. Im sure this symbolic action has generated some conversation in the prole depatment, and surely that is something. You say this person is crazy or whatever, why then did they hit the Dept of Finance? Maybr this ''Socialist'' think the ''proles'' should just behave?
The man was wearing a dark-coloured woolly hat and his face was covered by a scarf.
He wore a black, zip-up fleece top with a white logo and dark blue jeans. The t-shirt he wore underneath was light in colour.

The culprit, who was described as being about 6ft tall and wearing darking clothing and a hoodie top, fled on foot into Primrose Hill estate which is a few hundred yards from Tower.
mindless violence or expressed anger against government?
There is a rising anger amongst Irish citizens that is palpable at the moment, but causing destruction to public buildings which taxpayers will inevitably have to pay the bill for is not exactly a constructive way to go. Taxpayers can't afford to be replacing such bloody large fine windows.
It is a great pity the person who threw it did not issue a statement or leave a message or speak out anonymously to explain the reason for his/her action, because in the absence of such a message all we are left with is mere idle speculation and dismissive comments from ignorant people. I mean for all we know, it could have been some pissed off member of the SDU angry at the levies or of missing out on promotion (such people are frequently seen loitering outside such buildings looking menacing, and they have a past history of manufacturing incendiary devices).
