Newspaper opinion pieces are naturally partisan in content and often aim for controversialism, but such is the display of imposture in one from Tony Kinsella in the Irish Times of the 24th of August 2009 that it takes a whole plateful of biscuits.

'I don't have to imagine myself back in some dark age in order to be subjected to fact-free arguments. Tony Kinsella is doing it to people right here and now in the early 21st Century. He's wrong if he thinks it's going to go unchallenged or be accepted unquestioningly, though.'

On Saturday August 22nd members of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) and Free Palestine Campaign spent 10 hours on the streets of Galway city providing information on why IFPAL is calling for a No vote in the Lisbon referendum as a protest against the EU's support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Almost 1000 leaflets were distributed to passersby, who were mostly supportive.

The demonstration was joined in solidarity by a stalwart of the Shell to Sea Campaign, Naoise Ó Mongáin.

Yesterday morning, in a pantomine the wrong side of Christmas that elicited mirth, bemusement, alarm and some head scratching from passersby but which outraged an IFPAL activist watching over his charge, two Galway City Council workmen, shovel in hand, boarded a stage prop in the shape of an old pontoon in Claddagh Quay and as if the water were a potato drill, dug and shovelled their way out to the raft; MV IFPAL 2 - proudly displaying two large placards urging voters of conscience to Vote No in the Lisbon referendum. In 2005 the Dutch people overwhelmingly said ‘no’ to the constitutional treaty, just as the French had done some days before. In contrast to the Irish, this was the first time the Dutch people had been allowed a say about the future of Europe; and they made it clear that they didn’t like the way it was heading. Did they want to get out of the EU? No - the Dutch are big supporters of EU membership, just like the Irish, but they don’t want Europe to develop into a federal superstate. read full story / add a comment

Irish (and tourist) people wake up to a sign of the coming times in Dublin.

Hello friends,

This Morning, Saturday the 8th August at 7am, Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon (IFPAL) launched the Vote No To Lisbon raft on the River Liffey in Dublin City Centre.

Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon are calling for Irish voters to oppose the Lisbon Treaty in the forthcoming re-run of the Lisbon Treaty Referendum, a referendum that is exactly the same as the one they have rejected already. VOTE NO to Lisbon on October 2nd.

Issued on behalf of IFPAL.

The 2nd referendum on the lisbon treaty will be held shortly because we voted wrong the first time and the political elite of Europe are not happy with us Irish.

“They are bloody fools,” “They have been stuffing their faces at Europe’s expense for years and now they dump us in the s***.” Nicolas Sarkozy told aides, according to le Canard Enchaîné weekly after the No vote - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/arti...6.ece .
And this comes from the man who spends £600 pounds a day of tax payers money for flowers for his Palace - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/arti...7.ece

So why would Ireland want to give more power to Europe by voting YES when there is people like this in Power?? Ireland is corrupt enough as it is!

This is an obsure but alarming article. I had to read it twice to figure what it was saying: that it is a crime to advocate boycotting Israeli products in France. A man has been fined €1000 for organising a boycott of Israeli products; and the French appeals court and Council of Europe's European Court of Human Rights upheld this. read full story / add a comment

The Green Party’s decision to support the Lisbon Treaty and backtrack on its long standing campaign for a more democratic EU will be more of a hindrance than a help to the Yes side. The voters would currently not buy a used car from the Green Party let alone a rejected treaty. The party leadership has shown that once part of the so-called ‘accepted political establishment’ they turn their back on their principles read full story / add a comment

The Lisbon Treaty is the latest step in a process which, though its conception can arguably be traced to the Treaty of Rome itself, was born at Maastricht. This process is one of removing what is truly of fundamental importance to capitalism – principally, the way in which it manages its economy – from the realm of an at least partially democratised politics.

This is, moreover, not an exclusively European process, but one which is global. As parliamentary institutions have spread following the collapse of authoritarian systems of 'left' and right, they have simultaneously been deprived of a range of powers once considered proper to them. read full story / add a comment

The Lisbon Treaty will result in: A big-state power grab; copperfastening Laval; permitting direct EU taxes; exclusive power regarding foreign direct investment, & Court power to harmonise; abolishing right to propose Commissioner; establishing an EU Federal State; requiring citizen loyalty; power to decide our rights; abolishing veto, binding us in 32 new policy areas; reducing National Parliament power; a self-amending treaty; enabling politicians over voters and militarizing EU. Thats all we know about so far, there may well be even more. read full story / add a comment
national / eu / press release Wednesday July 08, 2009 17:21 by Patricia McKenna
the Government is engaged in a cynical exercise of political manipulation. Speaking on behalf of the People’s Movement, which successfully campaigned against ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in last year’s referendum, McKenna said “these so-called ‘Legal Guarantees’ on the Lisbon Treaty are nothing more than an exercise in creative manipulation designed to mislead the public. This fact was even recognised by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin who after EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg recently, said, “The impetus from other member states is to be helpful, creative and try to resolve these issues … We are quietly confident and hopeful,”

“What the Minister really means is that Legal guarantees on the Lisbon Treaty are just a creative way of giving people a feeling of legal certainty which does not and cannot exist.” Said McKenna read full story / add a comment

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says the Constitutional Court ruling is demanding a law to guarantee the rights of the German Parliament in the EU decision-making process.

If that is so, should not Oireachtas Eireann have a law requiring this too - and Westminster and Paris and Prague and Bucharest, and 22 others?

Should not all EU National Parliaments also have “participation in European lawmaking procedures”? read full story / add a comment
