The Societies Guild at UCC has twice rejected applications to set up a pro-choice society on campus on the spurious grounds that this issue is already covered by other groups - including in their first rejection the ludicrous suggestion that this was done by the anti-choice "Students for Life". read full story / add a comment

I just received a text from Niall Harnett saying that he just managed to walk and doctors are reasonably happy that no serious damage has be done to his back and neck. He has soft tissue trauma to the upper back and neck. He may be released tonight. A hospitalised S2S man had his prosecution case thrown out today despite fax from hospital explaining that he was unable to attend court. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday evening Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington was sentenced to 28 days in prison in relation to an assault charge arising from the incident at Pollathomais Pier on the 11th June 2007. This was the incident in which Garda led by Superintendent Joe Gannon with the assistance of a Shell digger forced their way onto private property, against the wishes of the landowner, so that Shell could place a portacabin at the base of the pier. Maura Harrington has been brought to Mountjoy Prison. read full story / add a comment

Sentenced to one month in prison for protesting against Shell Another Shell to Sea protester was imprisoned today when retired school teacher Maura Harrington was given a one month sentence for supposedly assaulting a garda on June 11th 2007. She received a round of applause from the people in the court as she was led off the the prison van, much to the judge's displeasure. Harrington was also ordered to pay a one thousand euro fine and one thousand euro to the Garda benevolent fund (she refused to agree to the latter). She arrived in Dublin tonight to be held in Mountjoy Prison on the North Circular Road. There was the usual heavy police presence, and when supporters gathered around the van to let her know they were there, the gardaí responded in the only way they know how, with violence. Since the protests against Shell started a large number of people have been injured by garda actions. Some have even been hospitalised, but not a single garda has been pros read full story / add a comment

On March 10th more than 50 ARAN members and supporters came and went during our lively lunchtime demonstration outside the EU Parliament offices in Dublin to urge Irish MEP’s to support an upcoming vote for a ban on seal ‘products’ from Canada into Europe. The aim of the demonstration was also to raise vital awareness of the campaign to passersby and members of the public. Tons of leaflets, bumper stickers and posters were distributed to educate and raise further awareness. As with all of ARAN’s work, we strive to ensure education is our primary focus. read full story / add a comment

Amid a wave of state repression against the Basque independence movement including the banning of its parties, the recent elections in the three south-western provinces of the Basque Country, the "Basque Autonomous Region", nevertheless resulted in 101,000 votes cast for the pro-independence Left. However, the exclusion of a significant section of the Basque nationalist spectrum, while not opposed by the conservative majority Basque nationalist party, looks like ending that party's tenure of power in the Basque Parliament. read full story / add a comment

Freedom of expression When asked to explain what kind of content had brought about the charge, the police refused to comment, saying it was too sensitive. But one officer, who did not want to be named, told the BBC it was comments about the monarchy posted by readers on the website at the end of last year that were at issue. The Thai authorities have been increasingly intolerant of perceived criticism of the monarchy in recent months. Thousands of websites have been blocked, and a number of people charged and arrested, including a well-known academic, who fled to Britain before he could be detained. However the use of the severe lese-majeste law has provoked widespread condemnation around the world, and a campaign by academics to have the law changed. By instead invoking the new computer crimes law - passed just 18 months ago - the authorities may be hoping to stifle debate about the monarchy without stirring up another outcry over freedom of expression in Thailand. read full story / add a comment

There are a few ways in which International Women's Day can be approached. It can be ignored. This is what mostly happens in the mainstream media. Unlike Valentines Day and Mothers Day, cards aren't given and presents aren't bought. With no profit to be made out of it, the day is not exactly one that jumps out and grabs the attention. read full story / add a comment
