The Sunday newspapers have shown great coverage of the Labour Party leadership contest after the resignation of Pat Rabbitte. However, for most left-wing activists the clash between Socialist Party's Joe Higgins and the Socialist Workers' Party's Richard Boyd-Barrett is very interesting. RBB cited the Party's "socialist roots" while Higgins said Labour are not a working class party and will not turn socialist. read full story / add a comment

Not prepared to weep crocodile tears, not prepared to wallow in vicious hypocrisy, instead, Galway IPSC did an eight hour slog outside Lynch's castle, Shop st, yesterday, in an attempt to wean people away from the 'aul sins of indifference and apathy towards the plight of Palestine and, instead, do something ; from boycotting Israeli Blood Diamonds, spuds, herbs, plastic garden sheds/containers sold by the Grafton Group (Atlantic Homecare/Woodie's DIY stores) to expressing their outrage to TD's, mainstream media, etc, on the obscenity of an Irish company; Cement Roadstone Holdings, profiteering from the construction of the illegal West Bank Apartheid Wall. read full story / add a comment

There's definitely a lot in, on & under this. Earlier this week global media attention was brought yet again to far right street violence in Germany when a mob chased several men of Indian origin through the streets of a small town. It is just over a year since the book burning incident at Pretzien (see article footnotes) & thus there is no reason to believe that the soul-searching which followed that incident amidst promises of appropriate action & policy to stave off racism have had any real success. But back to that drawing board the German state went this week as then the anniversary of Rudolf Hess the deputy to Hitler was marked by calls by the Udo Viogt the leader of the German far right party to posthumously award Hess with the Nobel Peace prize. As of yesterday Voigt is in custody & may face three years in prison. read full story / add a comment

25 prisoners have been reported killed in Brazil's latest prison unrest. They died in a fire which authorities say resulted from gang frictions in the Ponte Nova prison near Minas Gerais in the south west of the state, though other news sources claim the prisoners were in riot & had taken control of the prison at dawn. The prison built for 90 inmates (according to Globo Brazilian media & 70 according to Reuters) held 173 inmates. Many will know of the notoriety of the Brazilian penal system, recalling the Carandiru massacre in 1992 which led to military police killing 111 inmates in the prison of the same name. The current government which counts amongst its highest echelons individuals who served time in Brazilian prisons has been keen to convince onlookers that penal reform is a priority. Accordingly only last Monday the Federal government unveiled plans to build 160 new prisons as part of a wider strategy to stop gang violence. read full story / add a comment

A scheme like the one that Shell are trying to force on the people of Erris would never be allowed to go ahead in Norway. Statoil pride themselves on working closely with communities, and as a state company, some of their profits are going to pay for pensions, schools, hospitals etc in Norway, so to some extent they are working for the public good. Of course none of this applies in Ireland- here the people will gain next to nothing from the Corrib scheme, and those who stand against it are beaten and imprisoned. So today, some Shell to Sea activists gave out info to people passing the Norwegian Embassy and the Passport Office in Molesworth Street Dublin, encouraging people to take out Norwegian citizenship. It's the only way that Irish people can profit from Corrib gas... read full story / add a comment

In an interesting article, The Independent covered the latest disgrace by the British Government concerning the banning of and refusing entry to a Palestinian under 19s football team to the UK. The IPSC contacted UEFA re:this incident and we have received a non-committal reply saying that the Palestinians are not members of UEFA [while Israel is!!] and, anyway, this was a British Government decision and there is nothing they can do about it. All comments welcome. In the meantime we are awaiting breathlessly the Kevin Myers response to all of this. read full story / add a comment

The membership of Dublin IRSP has reacted angrily to the latest persecution by the special branch on a member of the party and his family. Yesterday evening twelve members of the special branch raided his family home and physically assaulted one of his sons who answered the door. Four of his children ranging from 20 years of age to a child of 10 were home at the time watching television when they were confronted by twelve special branch officers wielding machine guns and handguns, they were thrown to the ground and handcuffed, whilst firearms were held to there heads. The children were informed by an individual later identified as Detective Sergeant O’Driscoll (Harcourt Street) that they had a warrant to search the house for firearms. read full story / add a comment
