dublin / bin tax / household tax / water tax / news report Monday January 16, 2006 16:34 by Bin Tax Campaigner
Last week DCC claimed that 95% of households have paid the Bin Tax. Today they claimed it was 80%. Here are the accurate figures as provided in a reply to Cllr. Joan Collins (Ind.). Waiver: 40,000 households Fully Paid: 35,000 households Not paid/Arrears: 36,000 households So over half the households due to pay have not paid the tax in full or have not paid at all. This does not take into account the fact that many households have withdrawn from the service (one quarter nationally) and that rates of non-payment are much higher than average in working class areas of the city. Check Indymedia for info on public meetings throughout Dublin this week. read full story / add a comment

This morning members of the Finglas Anti-Bin Tax Campaign, along with residents of the McKelvey Estate, ensured that all bins were collected in that estate. The City Council, unable to impose blanket non-collection because of the fact that the bin tax arrears are subject to an upcoming Supreme Court test case, have resorted to trying to impose non-collection of unregistered bins in various areas of the city. FABTC members and local residents monitored the collection in McKelvey estate and ensured that all bins, including unregistered ones were collected. This was done with due care to the health and safety of all concerned. The action was good humoured and was carried out with consideration for the difficult position the refuse workers find themselves in. Once again proof that the anti-bin tax campaign is alive and well in Finglas! read full story / add a comment

Dublin City Council were given leave by Dublin Circuit Court to test the validity of Bin Charges in the Supreme Court. This throws the whole issue into the air again. The Council will not be able to bring any more non-payers to court until the case is heard, which may take up to a year. It also means that it will be very difficult for the Council to implement non-collection (which still has'nt happened in most parts of Dublin, despite all the huffing and puffing by the Council)given the question mark over the arrears.
